Oak Street Passive ADU

990 Oak St
Columbus OH 43201
Design/Build, New Build

Compton Construction collaborated on a forward-looking accessory dwelling unit (ADU) on Oak Street in Olde Towne East, designed by Geoalchemy Studio to explore sustainable, high-performance residential construction. Conceived as a certified passive house prototype, this custom ADU demonstrates how thoughtful orientation, natural materials, and precision engineering can deliver exceptional comfort, energy efficiency, and environmental harmony.

Sited to true north to maximize passive solar heat gain and solar electrical generation, the Oak Street Passive ADU integrates a super-insulated, airtight structure with a balanced mechanical ventilation system that provides continuous, gentle circulation of fresh air throughout the interior. The project employs exclusively natural and earth-aligned materials, including real wood-fiber insulation, clay and lime plasters, and an earthen plaster loft finish, promoting indoor air quality and long-term occupant comfort.

Design details emphasize both performance and sensory experience. Elements of sacred geometry guided spatial proportions and alignments, while handmade tile, brass accents, gold leaf detailing, and rounded corners reinforce a crafted, tactile atmosphere. Large, properly oriented glazing captures daylight and heat, reducing demand on mechanical systems while enhancing connection to the surrounding tree canopy and site context.

From early design through construction, the project team prioritized precision in the building envelope, sustainable material choices, and integration of passive solar strategies with solar power systems, resulting in a low-energy, high-comfort ADU prototype that advances sustainable housing practices in Central Ohio. The project is pursuing PHIUS Zero 2021 Certification which will make it the second certified passive house in Central Ohio.
