Designing Better Dental Offices: Insights from Ohio Dentists at the ODA Summit
In September, our team at Compton Construction joined hundreds of dental professionals at the Ohio Dental Association Annual Session in downtown Columbus. The Summit brought together practitioners, suppliers, and partners from across the state, each dedicated to advancing the way dental care is delivered and experienced.
We attended to connect, learn, and share our expertise in dental office construction. More importantly, we went to listen. Throughout the event, we asked a simple question:
“What are your must-haves in your dental space?”
The responses were as thoughtful as they were diverse. Dentists and office managers told us about the spaces that help them care for patients, support their teams, and grow their practices. Their answers revealed what makes modern dental offices special—and how great design and construction can make daily work smoother and more enjoyable.
Below are a few of the most common themes we heard and how they connect to what we do every day at Compton Construction.

Design that Works as Hard as You Do
Many dentists talked about how their office layout impacts efficiency. They described the need for efficient and productive floor plans, space to move freely around patients, and well-planned areas for sterilization and storage.
Words like flow, space, and functionality came up again and again.
That feedback aligns perfectly with our design-build approach. Our dental design-build projects begin by understanding how a practice operates—how instruments are stored, how patients move through the space, and how technology is integrated into treatment areas. From there, our project managers and designers plan every detail to support daily workflows.
We’ve seen how thoughtful design can save time, reduce stress, and improve the patient experience. Our team works closely with clients to ensure every operatory, sterilization area, and equipment location fits both current and future needs.
Creating Space for People, Not Just Procedures
Beyond equipment and layout, attendees told us they wanted environments that feel comfortable for both patients and staff. Bright, open waiting areas with natural light were at the top of nearly everyone’s list. Others mentioned elements like a coffee bar, kids’ play area, or calming features like aquariums and windows with outdoor views.
This feedback reflects a growing trend we’ve seen in dental office construction: the desire to move away from cold, clinical spaces toward environments that reflect a practice’s personality and values.
We’ve helped create offices that feel welcoming, warm, and memorable. Whether that means adding windows to every operatory, designing a right-sized and relaxing breakroom for staff, or creating a family-friendly waiting area, we understand how to balance aesthetics with function. Our design-build process gives clients control over how their space feels and performs from start to finish.
Technology Integration Is the New Normal
Many attendees mentioned digital scanners, upgraded equipment, and “steri centers” that keep sterilization processes organized and efficient. Technology is transforming how dental care is delivered, and construction must keep up.
Our experience in dental office construction spans everything from infrastructure upgrades for digital imaging to installing advanced HVAC systems that support surgical environments. With more than 40 years of combined experience in dental and medical projects, our team understands the technical requirements and codes that come with healthcare construction.
That expertise means fewer surprises during construction and a smoother transition into a new or renovated space.

The Compton Approach to Dental Design-Build
Our design-build model streamlines the entire process by keeping communication, design, and construction under one roof. From the first conversation to the final walkthrough, we manage every step. This approach gives our clients confidence that their timelines, budgets, and quality expectations are always aligned.
We partner directly with dental interior designers and equipment vendors to make sure everything—from chair placement to ceiling height—is coordinated before construction begins. That level of collaboration helps avoid costly delays and ensures the finished space performs beautifully from day one.
For many practices, we also serve as long-term partners, helping maintain and update offices through our Services & Small Projects division. Whether it’s a new build, renovation, or a quick upgrade, our goal is to be the partner you can call for any construction need.
Building for the Future of Dental Care in Ohio
The conversations we had at the Ohio Dental Association Summit reinforced what we’ve always believed: a great dental office is more than a workspace. It’s a reflection of your practice philosophy, your care for patients, and the environment you want to create for your team.
We’re proud to be among the Ohio dental contractors helping shape that future. Our commitment to craftsmanship, collaboration, and community drives every project we take on.
For dental professionals planning to build or renovate, Compton Construction offers the experience and insight needed to bring your vision to life. Whether you’re dreaming of a bright, open layout, better staff amenities, or a technology-ready operatory, we can help you make it happen.
